PREP DIG - INDIANA 2A PREVIEW: #4 ANDREAN

We’re finishing our regular season this week in Indiana, and our last day of play before the post season is this Saturday. The five teams listed here all have tough matches either in the end of this week or in their draw next week. Each of these teams needs a leader if they want to go far in the state tournament, so we list each roster’s general.

#1: Andrean (24-5)

Previous Ranking: #1

There are so many people on this roster that deserve credit for the Fighting 59ers successes this fall. No one player can do this alone, but if I were to pick one Andrean couldn’t do without, it would be Maddie Kmetz (’22, 5-9 S). She’s been setting there since forever ago, and currently averages ten assists per set in a steady and well-balanced offense. Miss Kmetz is a product of Michio Chicago, and will be a solid pickup for someone next fall. 2500+ career assists is an incredible feat for any setter at any level. Let’s hope she has a chance to hit 3k. And a title trophy wouldn’t be a bad addition either.

PREP DIG - INDIANA 2A PREVIEW: #4 ANDREAN

Probably the coolest, and most unique, of all of the mascots in Indiana comes from way up north, the Andrean Fighting 59ers. To go along with that cool is the fact that this is the only team I’m aware of in the state of Indiana that graduates exactly ZERO members from their 2020 campaign. With all of that talent coming back, a sectional title is a given, but how far can they go?

’22, Maddie Kmetz, 5-8 S

Does it feel like Maddie’s been at Andrean for 11 years? It should—she’s been their starter for almost forever, and will cap off a brilliant career as the only setter the Fighting 59ers have ever known for the past few years. Smooth in her movements, her hands and high and quick, and always sets the right matchup. Unlike a lot of kids that play on THIS side of the state line, Maddie plays club at Michio Chicago, making her schedule a little tougher than average. A big-time setter getting high-level training for a potential state championship squad? This is a can’t-miss prospect if I ever saw one.

Madison Kmetz – Michio Chicago 17 National

Indy Spring Showcase

Kmetz was the top setter I saw this past month live out of the Class of 2022 where she really stood out at the Indy Spring Showcase.  Great footwork, smooth release, and makes the game look pretty easy.  She connected extremely well with players that she hasn’t played with before.  She had a major presence on the court.  She plays her high school ball out of Indiana and club for Michio out of Chicago and will be one to watch once D1 schools can get back in the gyms.

Madison Kmetz – Michio Chicago 17 National

Kmetz was the best setter in the gym Friday night.  The 5’9 setter made everything look effortless from being able to set a quick tempo ball to setting behind for a slide.  The key to her success is that it all looks the same coming out of her hands where she receives the ball high and neutral.  Great feet, great hands, and the ability to put her attackers in a position to score points.  She also has the intangibles that every setter needs.

About Maddie Kmetz

More Than a High School Volleyball Player

I have been a competitive athlete since joining the local swim club at 4 years old.  I have enjoyed basketball and soccer, but when I first played club volleyball in 5th grade, I fell in love with the game.   Setting the ball became second nature to me.   As a freshman at Andrean High School, I earned the top spot as the starting setter on the varsity team.  I have recorded over 2,200 career assists and that includes a shortened season for 2020.  I was both humbled and proud to be named Captain of the 2020 Andrean volleyball team, as well as captain of my club team for the 2019/2020/2021 season.

In 2020, I switched volleyball clubs to play for Michio Chicago Volleyball Academy.  I was in search of a more competitive club where I could continue to advance my skills and meet new challenges.

Throughout my High School career, I have maintained academic honors and just recently was inducted into the National Honor Society.   My academic letter is just as important as my sports letter.  They go hand in hand.

2/17/2021 - Prep Dig Rankings Update: '22's That Run the Show

Maddie Kmetz, 5-7, Michio 17 National

We go WAY up north for Maddie, who’s been running a 5-1 on her high school team since her freshman year. She’s unassuming at first; 5-7, good skill, great hitters around her. But it is no accident how her teams always seem to win. A lot. Someone has to feed them the ball, whether the pass is great or not. Maddie is up to the task, and then some.
